Why does exercise make me leak?
Leaking when you exercise is known as stress incontinence. This occurs due to a weak urethral sphincter mechanism during the rise in intra-abdominal pressure that occurs during exercise. Weakness in the pelvic floor and poor posture is often associated with stress incontinence Pelvic floor symptoms can cause women to stop participating in physical activity which has many negative consequences. Why do I have a frequent urge to go to the bathroom that I can’t control?
Feeling like you have to urinate quite often may be due to overactive bladder (OAB). Weakness in the pelvic floor may or may not be contributing. A Pelvic Health PT will evaluate the pelvic floor and assess how the pelvic floor muscles may be contributing to your symptoms.
Do you work with men ?
Yes, incontinence affects everyone, men and women. While women often experience symptoms after pregnancy or as they age, men also have symptoms at different times in their lives and for different reasons.
Isn’t incontinence just part of getting older?
No, incontinence is not a normal part of aging. As you get older the muscles supporting the bladder become weaker. Seeing a pelvic health PT can teach you how to keep your muscles strong and your bladder healthy.
What is incontinence?
Urinary incontinence is a loss of bladder control. It is common. Over 25 million Americans experience some form of incontinence. It is embarrassing. You may experience light bladder leakage (mild incontinence) or it may be severe where you experience an urge that is so strong you can’t get to the bathroom in time. Are you a doctor?
I received my doctorate of physical therapy in 2015 from the University of South Florida in Tampa. My journey as a physical therapist began in 2002.
Why do I leak when I cough?
This also occurs due to a weak urethral sphincter mechanism during an increase in intra-abdominal pressure. Improving the strength and coordination of your pelvic floor muscles can aid in the prevention of leaking when you cough.
Will Physical Therapy help if I ‘ve had this problem for a long time?
It depends. Pelvic Health Physical Therapy can be very effective. It’s important to know what the root cause of your symptoms are. The goal of the evaluation is to assess what is contributing to your condition. Following a thorough evaluation, we will know what the next steps are in your treatment to help you meet your goals and get back to doing the things in life you love most.
Do you take insurance?
No. Insurance dictates the amount of time I can spend with each patient. It makes it almost impossible to provide quality care. I offer patients a 60 - 90 minute session to have the time to listen to your story, provide comprehensive assessments and treatments. Some insurances will reimburse you for the services provided
