Incontinence is Treatable
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary passing of urine. There are different types of urinary incontinence.
Stress incontinence is the most common. This is the leaking of urine due to increased pressure on your bladder. This can occur when you cough, sneeze, lift or exercise. It is commonly caused by weakened or stretched pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor muscles provide support to your bladder and urethra. Weakened & stretched muscles can occur during pregnancy and with child-birth. Hormonal changes during menopause can also contribute to stress incontinence.
Urge incontinence is a sudden urge to urinate that is very difficult to ignore. This is also known as overactive bladder. Symptoms may increase with increased stress levels or after consuming caffeine or alcohol. Constipation and obesity can also contribute to these symptoms.
If you are experiencing stress or urge incontinence you are not alone. One in four women have some type of pelvic floor dysfunction. Pelvic Floor Physical Therapists specialize in training the pelvic floor muscles. They can assess your pelvic floor function and tailor an exercise program to help you reach optimal levels of stability, control & strength for a better quality life. Talk to your healthcare provider to see if Pelvic Floor Therapy is for you.
